Godstone is a village in the county of Surrey , England . It is located approximately six miles east of Reigate at the junction of the A22 and A25 major roads, and near the M25 Motorway . Although there is a Godstone Railway Station , this is actually situated in South Godstone which is approximately 2 miles away. The name of the village was recorded in 1248 as ''Godeston'' probably deriving from "''Goda's ton''" (Goda's farm). Goda was the daughter of Edward The Confessor . She had died in 1055 but the Domesday Book of 1086 records the parish as being held by her husband, Count Eustace II Of Boulogne . Previously the village had been known as Walkingstead, meaning 'Wolcen's place'. The main village is incredibly pretty with a cricket green, playground and cute little cottages around Godstone Green. It also boasts the Bay Pond, where fishing can take place and 3 pubs! However, Godstone, like many other little villages nearby, has been terrorised over the past few years by gangs of "hoodies" who seem to not care who or what they are damaging. |
