Goat Rocks is the name of a series of rugged volcanic peaks roughly between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams in southern Washington state, and is at the core of the eponymous Goat Rocks Wilderness . Goat Rocks is named after the numerous Mountain Goats which live in the area. Goat Rocks was also a volcanic dome rock formation that existed on the north slope of Mt. St. Helens , an active volcano in the state of Washington . Goat Rocks was originally created in a series of eruptions between the years 1800 and 1857 , which is the eruption cycle now referred to as the Goat Rocks Eruptive Period. Beginning in March of 1980 , the north face of the mountain beneath Goat Rocks began to buldge outward due to the intrusion of Magma . Goat Rocks was obliterated in the major eruption event on May 18 1980 that destroyed the entire north face and top 1,300 feet of the mountain. |
