WHAT IS GCI GCI aims to be the single unifying force that brings manufacturers and retailers together on a worldwide parity basis to simplify and enhance global commerce and improve consumer value in the overall retail supply chain. It is a global user group, and its charter is to drive the implementation of EAN·UCC standards and best practices. WHY WAS GCI FOUNDED In October 1999 GCI was created by manufacturers, retailers and sponsors (Trade Industry Associations, regional ECR initiatives, VICS and standard bodies) to improve the performance of the international supply chain for consumer goods through the collaborative development and endorsement of recommended voluntary standards and best practices. WHAT IS GCI DOING GCI works to identify and address process barriers between continents and encourage the sharing of best business processes. HOW IS GCI STRUCTURED GCI was created as a worldwide voluntary body. In itself it is not a standards body but a global user group. It works with member companies, associations, ECR initiatives and existing standard bodies to facilitate and recommend optimum, commercially viable voluntary standards and key business processes for implementation by commercial users. HOW DOES GCI WORK GCI lives and operates through various Global Working Group s. Its backbone is the GCI Executive Board which comprises approximately 40 of the largest manufacturers and retailers on a worldwide parity basis. A small group of key members of the Executive Board form the Global Steering Group, which develops policy recommendations and oversees the day-to-day work of GCI. |
