GEOGRAPHY

Glassell Park is bordered by Atwater Village and Silver Lake on the west, the city of Glendale on the northeast, Echo Park on the southwest, Cypress Park on the southeast, Mount Washington on the east, and Eagle Rock on the northeast. While somewhat indefinite, the district's boundaries are roughly the Glendale Freeway on the northwest, the Los Angeles River on the southwest, Division Street on the east, and El Paso Drive on the northeast. Major thoroughfares include Eagle Rock Boulevard and San Fernando Road .

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Glassell Park is one of Los Angeles's older neighborhoods, having been developed in the late 19th century along the Pacific Electric Railway track that formerly ran in the median of Eagle Rock Boulevard and the adjoining hills. It is a quiet, almost sleepy, largely residential district, with a large industrial corridor along San Fernando Road (which parallels Union Pacific railroad tracks) and low-rise commercial buildings along Eagle Rock Boulevard. Today it is largely working class and Latino, having been abandoned by its original Anglo population.

Not often visited by many Angelenos, until recently Glassell Park was known most for its Gang problems. Concerted efforts by the Los Angeles Police Department and the community as a whole have made the area considerably safer in recent years. Glassell Park has benefited from (also victimized by) the southern California real estate boom that began in the early 2000s. The community has seen an influx of middle-class families moving into the neighborhood, attracted by its abundance of Victorian and Craftsman houses and relatively low prices.

Near-record rainfall in the winter of 2004-05 caused Landslides in Glassell Park, leading to the red tagging of 14 homes in Glassell Park and Mt. Washginton neighborhoods.
