Information About

Gina Gogean

Gina Gogean was a Romania n gymnast who competed internationally in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s .

Gogean was born on September 8 in Campuri , Romania . She competed under a passport that listed her birth year as 1977 . However, in 2002 the Romanian press discovered that her age had been falsified to make her age-eligible for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Gogean initially trained at CSS Foscani, near her home village, under the tutelage of Sergiu and Tatiana Popa. She made her international debut at the prestigious Japan Junior International meet in 1989, where she placed fourth in the all-around and took the gold medal on floor exercise.

By 1990, Gogean was representing Romania at major meets such as the Goodwill Games . She was the youngest member of the Romanian squad at the Barcelona Olympics, where she earned a silver medal with her team.

After the Olympics, Gogean was recognized as a significant member of the Romanian team. As many of her Romanian teammates, she was weak on the uneven bars. Ironically, as a junior Gogean had exemplary skills on bars, and was capable of performing a Counter-Kim, an E element. While she was criticized for her lack of artistry, uninspired choreography and bland presentation, the judges recognized her as a powerful, consistent competitor. She won individual medals in every World Championships between 1993 and 1997, and took second place in the all-around at the 1996 Olympics .

Gogean was coached by Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang and trained at the national centre in Deva .
