Ghost Master is a puzzle/strategy game for the PC. It is among a small selection of games that pit the player in the role of the enemy (see also Dungeon Keeper ). In this case the player assumes the part of a ''Ghost Master'' tasked with such goals as ridding a building of people by scaring them away or revealing a corpse to the mortals. To accomplish this, the Ghost Master has a team of subordinate "haunters" placed at his or her command. By completing a mission, the player gains gold plasm which may be used to teach a ghost new abilities. The game was ported to Mac OS X by Feral Interactive BASIC GAMEPLAY The game features many different kinds of levels to play in, ranging from small houses to an army base to even a hospital. These levels are almost universally based on (or at least named after) famous movies. Gameplay is along the lines of a Real Time Strategy Game , though there is more emphasis on creative use of your haunting team rather than resource management. Each level allows the player to bind ghosts from the haunter team to ''fetters'', which are different kinds of objects scattered throughout a level. Ghosts can only be bound to a matching fetter, with the more powerful ghosts typically having more restrictive fetters. For instance a deer's head hanging on the wall serves as a "murder" and "violence" fetter, and will only be able to support ghosts which are of this type. After being bound, ghosts then perform abilities according to the amount of "plasm" avaiable to the player. Plasm is the only resource available in-game, and it regulates the level of haunter's powers to which the Ghost Master has access. As mortals in the level become more afraid, they generate more plasm, which in turn allows more powerful abilities to be used. The end of the level rates the player based on his or her performance, and grants gold plasm according to this score. COMPLICATIONS The basic gameplay complication is simply getting the mortals frightened in the first place. All mortals have a belief meter that measures how likely they are to believe in (and thus be frightened by) supernatural phenomena. As this meter rises, they become more susceptible to different types of powers, and thus generate more plasm. Figuring out how to frighten each mortal is one of the key asepcts of gameplay, especially in later levels. Another complication is the freeing of trapped ghosts in each level. Almost every level has at least one ghost trapped that can be released to join the haunting team, provided the Ghost Master can figure out how to release it. Sometimes it's a simple matter of breaking its prison, but other times it's much more complicated. Generally, these ghosts are not required to be freed, but some must be to progress through the game. The final wrinkles are the various mortals (Priests, Witches, Mediums, and Ghostbreakers) who can detect and banish ghosts. A banished ghost is out of commission for the rest of the level, and costs a hefty amount of points at the end of the level. ROSTER There are a large amount of ghosts in the game, most of them are unlockable by finding them in levels where they will be trapped. As the player progresses through the game, certain ghosts are automatically added to the roster. EXTERNAL LINKS |
