The school, which serves grades 9-12, is a part of Kanawha County Schools .

The school serves the South Hills neighborhood of the city - and several incorporated areas nearby. The School is located at 1522 Tennis Club Road; it is one of eight public high schools in ''; and former Governor Bob Wise .

The school opened in 1965 with the goal of producing academically successful students by giving it a college like atmosphere and putting more responsibility on the students - a combined development of local educators, members of the West Virginia Department of Education, and faculty from the Ohio State University. The school's motto is "self direction", flexible scheduling and independent study, provide students with opportunities to direct themselves. George Washington is one of the most successful schools in the state, when it comes to academics. The school consistently wins awards as a National School of Excellence and in 2004 it was named by Newsweek magazine as one of the 1,000 best high schools in America, in 2005 it was the only high school in West Virginia to win a blue ribbon for excelling in No Child Left Behind requirements.
