A number of theories on how the ship sank were raised in the 30 years that followed the sinking, including being sunk by Russians mistaking it for a spy vessel and being forced under water by a submarine travelling through its fishing nets. In 1997, an expidition was sent out to find the wreckage. It was paid for by television companies from the UK and Norway. The Gaul's wreckage was eventually found that same year. An investigation, originally opened shortly after the vessel sank in 1974, was reopened in late 2004. In December of that year, it was found that the vessel had been sunk during heavy weather.
