The lyrics, in Latin , are a standard song of praise for the birth of Jesus Christ . The chorus goes as follows: :''Gaudete, gaudete! :''Christus est natus :''Ex Maria virgine, gaudete! Translating as : :Rejoice, rejoice! :Christ is born :Of the Virgin Mary, rejoice! RECORDINGS The Folk Rock group Steeleye Span had a hit in 1974 with an ''a cappella'' recording of the song. Guitarist Bob Johnson visited a church with his father-in-law in Cambridge and heard a folk-carol service. He was attracted by the song and brought it to the attention of the rest of Steeleye Span. In 1997 it was recorded by the classical group Mediaeval Baebes as part of their No. 2 selling classical recording ''Salva Nos''. When classical composers write harmonies for choirs they generally divide the voices by intervals called thirds and sixths. Unusually, Gaudete is sung with voices separated by fourths and fifths. To take a more familiar example, The Beatles voices in "Michelle" are sung in thirds and sixths, and "Paperback Writer" is sung in fourths and fifths. It gives an edge to the sound. The Time-signature is also strange, as it appears to be in 7/4. Some scholars have speculated that medieval clerical students must have taken folk tunes and preserved them by adding them to sacred words. EXTERNAL LINKS |
