Gasoline Direct Injection Engines

Gasoline or Petrol Engines that have fuel injection directly into the combustion chamber are known as GDI engines. They employ single or multi hole nozzle injectors that spray the fuel into the combustion chamber. GDI usually operate as a stratified charge engine at part load conditions and as a homogeneous charge engine duting full load. They use high levels of EGR and have very low emission levels. High EGR reduces the combustion temperature and this decreases NOx emission by a great deal.

GDI engines are also known to operate unthrottled, like diesel engines. There is no throttle like in conventional gasoline engines and are controlled by the fuel injected per cycle. GDI engines are employed in the 2006 Mazda 6 and in the new Audi 's (FSI).
