Gas Lift Chairs

They allow the user to modify their height in relation to the height of a desk, leading to an increase in comfort and Chiropractic benefit.

HISTORY

The gas lift chair was first conceived by an office worker for (the then known as) PriceWaterhouse Accountants, Kylie-ree Dean, who was unhappy with the comfort level of office furniture provided by her notoriously prudent management. Apparently, many of the office workers in the building often had conversations over morning tea, complaining of uncomfortable knees and sore backs while working. This persuaded Kylie (whose father, Lewis Dean, was a renowned cabinet maker) to begin designs of a new type of chair with increased comfort and useability, or Ergonomics . Inspired by the hydraulic mechanics of forklift trucks in the factory next door, Kylie began to incorporate a smaller and more efficient hydraulic model into her designs. The result was the contemporary model of the gas lift chair, which allows the user to immediately raise or lower their height with the simple push of a Lever . This was included with modern features of the time including armrests, a swiveling base and wheels for mobility.

PATENT

Kylie lodged her patent with the UK patents office in 1963 and was subsequently granted a 15 year patent for the design. Manufacture of the chair was licensed to 3M Innovations who began mass production of a more stable design almost immediately.

SUCCESS

After small advertising campaigns, followed by an unprecedented level of media support, the Gas Lift Chair (first marketed as Turbolift) met with huge success. Exposure on popular programs including Monty Pythons' Flying Circus and Get Smart thrust the Turbolift into mainstream consumerism. Kylie's stake in royalties proved a valuable asset and she soon was able to quit her job and move to the small village of St. Gallen near Geneva , Switzerland where she married and was never again seen in the public arena.

GAS LIFT CHAIRS TODAY

Modern gas lift chairs have new and improved features such as tilt control and adjustable back height. These were released when the patent expired and generic versions are now marketed by many companies including Ikea, LeCornu and Walmart.
