In October of 1965, Gamma Delta Pi was founded to promote sisterhood between women at Ithaca College. This sorority is unique because of the college's disapproval of Greek life, which it tried to shut out in the 1990s after the death of a fraternity pledge in a hazing event. At that time, the college recognized the contributions of the sorority, however, it began to shut down greek life. When the law changed and students had to be 21 to drink the college was there to ensure this policy and so Gamma Delta Pi, unlike the other members of the Inter-Fraternity Council, willingly chose to go off campus.
Today, this local social service sorority takes pride in the fact that its members are known by their names and faces and not simply by numbers. Because of its smaller size, each woman accepted as a sister can build a name for herself in the sorority while being part of an elite connection. The initiation process to join Gamma Delta Pi and most names of its sisters are unknown to the public, however, rumor of their achievements has spread far beyond the small city of Ithaca.
Gamma Delta Pi continues to plan social and community service oriented events for members of the college community and it accepts new woman to organize a pledge class each semester. The sorority has been recognized many times for its community service contributions and its close relationship with Cornell fraternities. No plans to become reaffiliated with the college are currently underway, however, a number of communiy members have urged the Gamma Delta Pi sorority to recreate a relationship between the administration and the greek life many students are involved in.
In the fall of 2006 Gamma Delta Pi sorority will hold a reunion for the 700 alumnae that are part of its sisterhood.
