INTRODUCTION The future years of the Star Trek universe have been speculated upon since television first aired the original series in 1966. Since then, the “future’s future” has been featured only a handful of times on the various series of the world-famous television show. However, the Gamma Contention Fleet seeks to expand upon that somewhat shrouded aspect of the Star Trek universe. THE HISTORY Founded on May 15, 2002, the Gamma Contention Fleet, or GCF as it is commonly referred to, is an online, forum-based Star Trek Role Playing Game comprised of over forty registered members, and continues to grow steadily. Many members are veteran role players with great talent and ability. Commanding Officer Admiral Tristan Errland III is a seasoned role-player with six years of experience in various RPG’s such as the late FDTF , Space Station Valhalla, Space Station Orion , Section 47 , and of course, four years as commanding officer of the Gamma Contention Fleet . Site Executive Officer Vice Admiral Telik is also an experienced Role player of five years, having been part of the FDTF , Space Station Valhalla, Megiddo Project , and four years in the Gamma Contention Fleet (Additional related information later). In 2006 the GCF underwent a major update and reconstruction which came to be known as Project GCF2006. The site now features its own domain (www.starfleetstrikesback.com) , fully registered invisionboard software, a chat room, e-mail service, and easily navigated, and well outlaid pages containing information on the fleet’s personalized array of futuristic starships, Federation technology, other species, and much more. It is also the only known Star Trek RPG to feature its very own wicked, evil, and dastardly, yet suave and charming emperor of a neighboring empire. THE STORY The game is set in the late 2600’s, and is centered on the war with the Borg Collective. The fleet is located within the “shadow nebula,” a massive and heavily ionized nebula located deep within Borg space. According to the non-canon storyline of the site, the Borg assimilated the Romulan Empire in 2653, leaving only a few Romulans to roam the galaxy as smugglers or traders. Then in 2655, the Borg gain control of the entire gamma quadrant and begin assimilation runs on outlying Federation colonies. The Klingon Empire was forced to join the Federation in 2678 in order to help prevent the total assimilation of the alpha quadrant. Finally, when the year 2693 came about, the Borg managed to sneak forces into Federation space and make a direct attack on earth. Much of the Federation’s paradise planet was devastated and earth lost over thirty percent of its population to assimilation before the Negative Order, a delta quadrant power which annihilated the Cardassian Empire, subjugated the Borg attackers. THE TECHNOLOGY TRADITION When it comes to matters of the command structure, the Gamma Contention Fleet holds true to traditions of Star Trek. There is no point system to determine rank. In the opinion of the administration, a rank system based on points is no rank system at all. An officer who knows his trek may not have the maturity to captain a starship or administrate a department. Therefore, promotions are given meritoriously by respective command level officers. As a person matures as an officer and shows ability to handle more responsibility, that person climbs through the ranks and is given that responsibility. Like promotions, medals are also meritorious. Such honors such as the good conduct medal, the combat action medal, the purple heart, the silver star, and other special commendations, are awarded as a character proves himself worthy. Typically medals are directly awarded for acts of bravery and courage during fleet missions or ship missions, but medals can also be awarded for ongoing shows of good character or sportsmanship. Also, in line with Star Trek tradition, the academy still takes cadets on shipboard training missions. Observations show that cadets, especially new RPers, are more smoothly acclimated to the futuristic atmosphere when learning beside other cadets and when directed by an experienced GCF officer. In the Gamma Contention Fleet, the academy is directed by Admiral Blake Shepard , and Lieutenant Commander Kathyrn Greene . VETERAN MEMBERS Folded harmoniously into the ranks of membership within the Gamma Contention Fleet are many veterans of the Star Trek RPG universe. If you have ever been involved in any of the major Trek RPG’s, you will probably recognize a few of the names listed below: IMPORTANT EVENTS Since the game takes place so far from the time of current Star Trek, logic suggests that there are many dates of importance between the twenty-fourth century, and the twenty-seventh. This is exactly the case. To help orient you to events of the timeline, here is a list of the future’s major events: 2549... A Delta quadrant power called the Negative Order invades and destroys the Cardassian Empire within days. 2653... The Borg assimilate ninety-eight percent of the Romulan Empire, leaving the rest to wander around the galaxy as trade merchants and smugglers. 2655... The Borg gain control of the entire gamma quadrant and begin assimilating outlying sectors of the alpha quadrant. 2656… Forces along the former neutral zone are forced to retreat, leaving light years of Federation territory to the Borg. Worlds are assimilated, ships are destroyed, lives are taken. The ruthless Collective continues to expand. Still, Starfleet hopes for peace. 2662... The Negative Order, once a precarious trade partner with the Federation, makes an unexpected attack on a Starfleet border outpost and declares war. The Federation begins organization of the Delta Contention Fleet to contend with the matter. 2678... To avoid certain destruction from the Borg, the Klingon Empire is forced to retreat into Federation space, which is now dwindling as the days drag on. 2693… The Borg manage to force their way into the Sol sector and deface a considerable portion of earth. Hundreds of thousands of people are assimilated before the threat is neutralized and earth is left in a state of carnage and destruction. The year is now 2694 and the Federation has been forced into a bloody and horrific war with the Borg Collective. On every border, Starfleet struggles against bloodthirsty adversaries who are bent on destroying their way of life. The Gamma Contention Fleet, a tactical wing designed specifically to contend with the Borg threat from the gamma quadrant, was established inside a massive nebula which is located inside the borders of Borg space. Now this fleet is the last remaining stronghold preventing the Borg from overtaking the Federation and the alpha quadrant. CONCLUSION Joining our tightly nit group of role players in the Gamma Contention Fleet is a simple process. Reading the officer handbook and filling out an application is all one needs to do to become a member. All services are, and will remain free or charge. This will make the experience fun for you, and for those working with you. An exciting future awaits you, and it’s all right here! |
