Gabriel Bernal




Bernal was a top-ten Flyweight contender when he went to Tokyo to face hometown favorite Kobi Kobayashi for the WBC Flyweight Champion. Bernal would destroy Kobayashi winning by 2nd round Knockout. Two months later, Bernal would successfully defend his title in Nimes, France by defeating Antoine Montero by 11th round Knockout. This was significant because the previous six WBC Flyweight Champions had all lost their title in their first defense.

Bernal is long-remembered for his series of fights with Thailand 's Sot Chitalada . For Bernal's second defense, he would go to Bangkok , Thailand to face Chitalada. He would lose a 12 round decision on October 8, 1984. Eight months later, Bernal would travel back to Bangkok in an attempt to wrest the title from Chitalada. On June 22, 1985, Bernal would fight Chitalada to a 12 round draw and Chitalada would keep thte title. Bernal would get one more shot 18 months later and would once again have to travel to Bangkok. On December 10, 1986 he would lose another 12 round decision to Chitalada. It would be his final attempt at the Flyweight title.

Bernal would fight another 6 years, but would never be the same fighter. On April 11, 1992 he would lose a 12 round decision to former WBC Bantamweight Champion, Miguel Lora . He would fight one more fight before retiring. He would finish his career with a record of 43-15-3 and 28 KOs.
