Information About

Freedom Cup

The Freedom Cup is a rugby union trophy contested every 2 years between South Africa and New Zealand , during the Tri-nations tournament. It was first contested in 2004, and South Africa currently hold the trophy.

The cup was developed to commemorate the inclusion of black players into South Africas rugby union side, where traditionally, the Apartheid meant that South Africa's national team was white, and they often refused to play other international teams if they included non-white players. This was highlighted in the 1981 Springbok tour.
