The fortress, primarily, serves as an enemy stronghold for most of the duration of the game. The master of the island, and also the main antagonist, is none other than Ganondorf . It is heavily guarded from all points of entry, with many Shipwreck s surrounding the area as ominous warnings to those that venture near. It is unclear whether these boats were simply passing by or attempting to breach the fortress' walls. Floating explosives are placed quite a distance away from the island as a method to either destroy or deterr incoming vessels from its territory. If one were to manage to get past this frontline defence, the citadel's search beams would pose as a serious problem if one were to infiltrate the fortress. Wall-mounted cannons openly fire at anything that moves that's caught in the search lights, and are most likely the cause of the sinking of the many surrounding wrecks. Inside the walls of the fortress are many of Ganondorf's minions, including Bobokin s, Moblin s, thieving rats, and most of all The Monstrous Helmaroc King , who keeps close watch of the island from its roost when it is not on searching duties. Phantom Ganon also makes an appearance here. Aside from its role as Ganondorf's base of operations, the Forsaken Fortress also protects a holding cell situated deep within the premises. It is here that two girls from Windfall Island , Maggie and Mila, and Link 's younger sister, Aryll , are held for being suspected of being descendants of Princess Zelda . Link first manages to make his way into the fortress by being launched out of a cannon with the help of the pirates, and makes his way into the central area of the island, where the girls are being held. Unfortunately, he is halted by the patroling Helmaroc King, and is taken to the top of the fortress, where Ganondorf orders the giant bird to fling Link out to sea, although it is not entirely apparent at that moment that it is in fact Ganondorf that was standing there. Link is advised to keep a safe distance from the Forsaken Fortress once he is rescued by the King Of Red Lions , and officially sets out on his journey. After retrieving the Master Sword from the land beneath the waves, Link once again returns to the fortress for a second attempt at rescuing his sister along with the other girls. Again, he manages to get to the central area where the holding cell is located, and cautiously makes his way over to a delighted Aryll. Once Link realizes that he can't open the door, Tetra the pirate, along with two of her servants, arrive in a Deus Ex Machina moment in order to pick the lock of the cell and help Maggie, Mila, and Aryll escape to safety. Link seems ready to leave as well, but Tetra quickly reminds him that he has uninished buisness with the Helmaroc King, to which Link calmly acknowledges. After Tetra and the pirates escape with the girls, Link is indeed attacked by the Helmaroc King, who dives down through the open ceiling in attempt to repeat what it did the last time Link was here. However, this time events turn in Link's favor, as he successfully defeats the Helmaroc King on the upper roof of the fortress. After the giant bird is vanquished, Link makes his way to the uppermost area of the Forbidden Fortress, which, unlike most of the stone-composed island, is make of wood. Inside the wooden structure, Ganondorf formally introduces himself to Link. He commends Link for his abililty to worm his way to the summit of the fortress and defeat the Helmaroc King. However, when Link attempts to strike Ganondorf with the Master Sword, it simply bounces off with no effect. Ganondorf strikes Link down, and explains how the sword's power to repell evil had been lost. Before he is able to finish Link off, Ganondorf is attacked by Tetra. He curses and flings the girl off his back, eventually picking her up off the ground in order to take her down as well. However, when he attempts to touch her, his Triforce of power reacts, signalling that Tetra is indeed the descendant of Princess Zelda that he had been searching for. He intends to take Tetra away for his own purposes, but his plans are quickly thwarted when Tetra is snatched from his grasp by a member of the Rito tribe, along with an injured Link. The Rito's guardian, Valoo the Dragon , is also with them, and with his firey breath he torches the highly flamable wooden structure with Ganondorf still inside. The structure, rendered unstable by the instense flames, plummets to the ground, destroying much of the Forsaken Fortress as it falls. After this scene, the Forsaken Fortress becomes desolate and inoperative. Valoo states that Ganondorf was surely unharmed by the attack, and that they shouldn't relax for too long. The player can still enter the island, but will notice that there is little to no activity. It remains this way for the rest of the game, as Ganondorf has escaped to the land beneath the Great Sea. |
