It was founded in 1887 as a company town by John Baptist Ford (1811-1903) as the site for Works No. 3 of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, now known as PPG Industries . The factory employed as many as 5,000 workers in its heyday. Western Pennsylvania is an industrial, agricultural, and coal-mining region. In 1900, 2,870 people resided in Ford City; in 1910 , 4,850 people lived there; and in 1940 , 5,795 of them lived there. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,451. PPG shutdown its Ford City operations in the 1990s. REFERENCES GEOGRAPHY Ford City is located at 40°46'17" North, 79°31'48" West (40.771410, -79.529906). According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 2.0 Km&2 (0.8 Mi&2 ). 1.8 km&2 (0.7 mi&2) of it is land and 0.2 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 10.13% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 3,451 people, 1,580 households, and 935 families residing in the borough. The Population Density was 1,876.7/km&2 (4,864.8/mi&2). There were 1,713 housing units at an average density of 931.5/km&2 (2,414.8/mi&2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.38% White , 3.88% African American , 0.14% Native American , 0.17% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.14% from Other Races , and 1.27% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,580 households out of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were Married Couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% were non-families. 37.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.84. In the borough the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 25.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $24,457, and the median income for a family was $30,843. Males had a median income of $28,438 versus $21,919 for females. The Per Capita Income for the borough was $14,318. 13.4% of the population and 13.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
