LEAGUE FOOTBALL IN MALAYSIA

League football in Malaysia is currently split into two divisions:

The teams involved include both club teams and representative sides of the regional Football Associations in Malaysia. A representative team from the neighbouring country of Brunei is also involved. ( Singapore has also entered a team in the past and has won the Malaysian league twice, but has not been involved since winning their last league title in 1994 .)

At the end of the league season, 16 teams (including Super League teams and the best-performing teams from the Premier League) qualify for the season-ending Malaysia Cup competition. The Malaysia Cup is the country's oldest football competition (it began in 1921 ) and is considered by many to be Malaysia's most prestigious sporting event. When the league competition began in 1982 it was intended primarily as a qualifying tournament for the Malaysia Cup, however over the years since then the league competition gained important stature in its own right.
