Foot Whipping

The prisoner is first immobilized before subjected to torture. Means of immobilization vary. One common means is spread-eagling the subject horizontally and securely binding his hands and bare feet to four posts. (Unfortunately, each foot must be individually whipped in this situation, which creates extra work for the torturer.) More convenient is imprisoning the feet in a stocks-like device: the prisoner is laid on his back, and his bare feet are locked into an elevated device that secures the ankles and raises the feet to a convenient height.

The number of lashes is strictly prescribed based upon the nature of the offense. In a recent (since 1990 ) case where a European visitor was convicted of selling alcoholic beverages to Muslims, a sentence of fifty lashes on the bare feet was carried out. Fifty seems reasonably standard: certainly, ten is quite few and one hundred is regarded as excessive.

The torture is conducted with a stout leather bullwhip, solid enough to "sing" as it cuts through the air. After the prisoner has been prepared, the torturer stands at an appropriate distance and wields the whip so that, when cracked, its tip and last few inches land directly across the sole of the naked foot. The procedure is agonizingly painful.

After the execution of the sentence, the prisoner is freed from his bonds and carried back (walking is difficult at this point) to a neutral area where—more often than not—a nurse attends to his feet to dress any wounds. If inflicted by an expert, the torture should leave little more than red marks: drawing blood implies excessive severity. The victim's feet will hurt for some time, but permanent damage is highly unusual.

This form of torture was depicted in the movie '' Midnight Express '', set in a Turkish prison during the 1970s .
