A Foot Drill is an essential part of the Military Training Syllabus of today's Armed Forces . "Foot drill" or "drill" stems from when Soldiers used to march into battle where they would be expected to form three ranks and react to words of command from their commanders once the battle commenced; for example, "Fix Bayonets", which is still used today, albeit not on the battle field but to provide a spectacle at a military event. Much of the drill done today is ceremonial, although military discipline is founded on drill as it requires instant obedience to commands. Drill has often been used as a forerunner to great battles, and during them it justified itself. When a battle had been won, a parade, in whatever place. This was done to quickly restore the corporate unity of the said body of men. Contrary to popular belief, the drill should never be used as punishment, but to merely raise the standards of a body of men. The aim of drill is to: #Produce a soldier who is proud, alert and obedient. #Provide the basis of teamwork. #To facilitate orderly movement of large groups |
