Food avoidance eating disorder (FAED) is the fear of food in children. Children with FEAD aren't afraid of gaining weight. They are afraid to eat and may only eat a very limited variety of foods. These children are younger than those with anorexia, but too old to be considered picky toddler eaters. Their fear of food, fear of eating new foods, and fear of taste has caused symptoms of clinical malnutrition. FAED children are more likely to be male and have poor muscle tone and body composition. They are grossly underweight and often have dental problems such as cavities and those of an orthodontic nature. Those suffering from FAED since toddlerhood may have cranial abnormalties. These children want to get better and gain weight, but are unable to do so. The average age is 12 years old. They may have eaten normally and then suddenly changed. They are often treated by doctors as having a physical problem rather than a psychological one. |
