First formed in 1976 by Cameron Hawkins and Nash The Slash , the band released their debut album ''Black Noise'' the following year. Martin Deller appeared on drums. The album was noted for its unique sound, which used Electric Mandolin in place of lead guitar.

Nash subsequently left the band to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Ben Mink .

The band released three more albums before breaking up in 1983 , but then reformed as Nash's supporting band for one of his solo tours. In their second incarnation, they released two albums, and then disbanded in 1989 .

The band then reformed again in 1994 , releasing the album ''RetroActive'' the following year and subsequently disbanding a third time.

In CD. This brought Hawkins and Deller to talking and they decided to reform FM, including performing at NEARFest 2006.

Other members of the band have included Greg Critchley and Simon Brierley .
