Information About

Flying Kipper

The Flying Kipper is a fictional goods Train from the Childrens Book collection, The Railway Series , by the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry , and the spin-off television show Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends .

ORIGINS

At Knapford in the TV Series or Tidmouth in the books, the fictional Island Of Sodor has its largest Harbour , where most of the island's seabound traffic comes and goes. Among this traffic are fishing trawlers which unload their fish on a quay. Some of it is sold in local shops. Most of it, however, is loaded in a train which delivers this fish to other stations on Sodor, and onwards to mainland Britain . The railwaymen have named this train ''The Flying Kipper''.

The Flying Kipper is first seen in the book Henry The Green Engine , where Henry has been assigned to pull it. At first, everything goes well, but due to wintry conditions, Henry is inadvertantly diverted into a siding and crashes into another goods train. This event, however, has a silver lining, in allowing Henry to be repaired and improved at Crewe , becoming a much better engine. Last seen, the Flying Kipper is still pulled by Henry, although James The Red Engine once pulled it for him while he was being repaired.
