Flight Envelope

The flight envelope of an Aircraft is a Mathematical construct describing its performance limits, specifically the curves of speed plotted against other variables (generally altitude) to indicate the limits of speed, altitude, and acceleration that a given aircraft cannot safely exceed.

REASONS FOR THESE LIMITS

Drag

The red line in the picture indicates the speed limit caused by drag. At low altitude the air is much denser than at high altitude, allowing aircraft to go much faster at high altitude. This limit can be stretched improving the Aerodynamics of the aircraft or installing more powerful engines.

Thrust limit

The green line in the picture indicates the thrust limit of the aircraft.

Zero rate of climb

The blue line in the picture indicates the Flight Ceiling or maximum altitude an aircraft can travel at. This limit is caused by the Lift of the aircraft getting smaller at higher altitudes, until it no longer exceeds Gravity .

Stalling speed

The teal line in the picture indicates the minimum speed the aircraft can travel without Stall ing.
