In the Animated Series '' The Simpsons '', the Flanders are a Family consisting of ''' Ned ''', ''' Maude ''', and their two sons '''Rod''' and '''Todd'''. They live at 740 Evergreen Terrace, next to the Simpson Family . Matt Groening has indicated that the Flanders family is named after NW Flanders Street in Portland, Oregon . NED FLANDERS See Also: Ned Flanders MAUDE FLANDERS See Also: Maude Flanders ROD AND TODD Rod Flanders is voiced by Nancy Cartwright , while '''Todd Flanders''' is voiced by Pamela Hayden . In the earlier episodes they are shown as students of Springfield Elementary, but in the later episodes they are shown as being Home Schooled , although in Skinner's Sense Of Snow Ned and Homer rescue them from the school. Rod and Todd, like their parents, are very religious and enjoy attending church, watching religious cartoons, and playing religious-themed boardgames. Maude and Ned prohibit them from consuming foods containing sugar, as they fear it will make them behave badly. They are also extremely Entomophobic (particularly moths and ladybugs), a behavior probably learned from their father, as he considers an insect flying near someone an "attack." Rod also has Diabetes (described as 'one of his favourite hobbies' along with 'being quiet during trips'), and is prone to bedwetting. It has been implied the two are Homosexuals . Rod once told Ned he was jealous of girls because they get to wear dresses. However, in the episode ''Future-Drama'', Bart's future girlfriend mentions she wants to make love with Bart on prom night and becomes disappointed when he denies her, adding "I never had this problem with Todd Flanders!", implying a latent playfulness in Ned's son. Also, in one episode, Ned moves away and then moves back to Springfield. When announcing this to the boys, Rod says he has a girlfriend. GRANDMA FLANDERS Ned's mother or possibly grandmother. The character was voiced by Pamela Hayden . She only appears in one episode, in which Bart is dropped off at the Flanders' house while Marge gives birth to Lisa. Her countenance scares Bart. Her current fate is unknown. OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS Ned Flanders's parents were Beatnik s, as seen in the episode " Hurricane Neddy ", they did not punish him at all during his childhood, causing him to be an unholy terror of a child. They came to Dr. Foster who tried an experimental procedure on Ned, which left him unable to express any anger at all. We also know that Ned has a very large extended family, as seen in his family reunion in the episode " Lisa The Vegetarian ". The two members mentioned are Jose Flanders and Lord Thistlewick Flanders, who seems to consider himself above the whole silly talking, and seems to be the only one in the family to do so. He replies to Homer's introduction with "Charmed," and only with prodding from Ned does he add "a googily... doogily." HOUSEHOLD The Flanders' house is situated at 740 Evergreen Terrace , Springfield and is next door to 742 Evergreen Terrace , home of the Simpson Family . The home phone number is 636- 555 -8904. The house is a two-story detached house with a connected garage. The house itself is pink-purple in colour, with red window frames and a blue-orange canopy above the front-door. Inside the house, most if not all the rooms include religious imagery and photographs of the (late) Maude Flanders. The house is well furnished with expensive-looking furniture, which Ned claims he buys cheaply because it used to be "evidence from a murder trial". The layout of the house appears to be similar to that of 742 Evergreen Terrace, with two front rooms and two back rooms. The basement of the house has been converted to a 'rumpus room', with a bar and snooker table (oddly since Ned later confesses to being a Teetotal er). The house also has a panic room and a secret room stashed full of Beatles merchandise. The Flanders' residence once had a Bomb Shelter in the backyard, but this was destroyed by a small Meteorite . The Flanders' have a Satellite Dish but lock out 230 of the channels it offers. It is implied they only channel not locked out is one which airs Christian programming for children. The Flanders' also have Air Conditioning , which Homer steals in one episode, in order to gain relief from the heat. Ned, Rod and Todd sleep upstairs. Rod and Todd share bedrooms, and there is also at least one spare bedroom where Bart Simpson slept when he was younger, which Ned later rents out. The garden of the house includes a patio and a barbeque and is often used for Ned's barbeque and birthday parties. (Note: Although the house is generally labelled 740, in one episode it is at number 744 Evergreen Terrace, and since very early episodes of The Simpsons had 742 Evergreen Terrace at different numbers, it is reasonable that 740 Evergreen Terrace used to be different as well). OTHER INFORMATION The Greenbelt Christian arts festival sometimes runs a Ned Flanders lookalike contest in tribute to one of TV's best-known Christians. In Groening's hometown of Portland, Oregon , ''Simpsons'' fans vandalize the signs that say NE Flanders Street to say NED Flanders Street. RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SIMPSONS The Flanders live next door to the Simpsons, and these two families could not be more different. The Flanders are well-kept, Pious individuals. Constantly being harassed by the Simpsons, they have surprisingly gone through a lot. Homer was in one episode good friends with Ned, but became obsessed with spending time with him. At the end of the episode, everything was back to normal. When Bart and Lisa were taken into protective custody by child services from their 'unfit' parents, the Flanders were their foster parents, and almost went through with Baptizing them, if Homer hadn't saved them. Bart tied with Todd in an ego-boosting Golf tournament. Ned and Homer took a wild trip to Las Vegas , where, in their Inebriation , married some waitresses. Even with all the crazy things that happen to them, the Flanders and the Simpsons have managed to live together for all these years. "THE ADVENTURES OF NED FLANDERS" ''The Adventures of Ned Flanders'' was a short that appeared at the end of the episode " The Front ". Here, the Flanders dedication to religion and perfect family niceness is yet again highlighted when Ned almost scolds his kids, who refuse to get ready for church, only to soon realise that it is Saturday. The short featured a Theme Song titled ''Everyone Loves Ned Flanders''. Hens Love Roosters Geese Love Ganders Everyone else loves Ned Flanders Not me! Everyone who counts loves Ned Flanders! "EVERYBODY HATES NED FLANDERS" ''Everybody Hates Ned Flanders'' was a Torch Song Homer wrote in episode " Dude, Where's My Ranch? " In the beginning, Homer tries to write a Christmas song when Ned comes in and irritates him by trying to assist in the song. Homer then created the song which starts... Everybody in the USA, Hates their stupid neighbor, He's Flanders and he's really, really laaaaame, Flanders tried to wreck my song, His views on Birth Control are wrong, I hate his guts and Flanders is his name F-L-A-N-R-D-S! He's the man that I hate best, I'd like to see his house go up in flames. F-L-A! His name is Ned! E-R-S! It's a stupid name, he's worse than Frankenstein or Dr. No. You can't upset him even slightly, He just smiles and nods politely, Then goes home and worships nightly, His leftorium, is an emporium, of woe. F-L-A! Don't yell at Ned, D-E-R! His wife is dead, Everybody hates that stupid jerk. Springfield rocks with Homer's joyous loathing, Filling clubs with angry valentinos. You don't have to move your feet, Just hate Flanders to the disco beat, He's your perky peppy nightmare neighborino. If you despise polite left-handers, Then I doubt you'll like Ned Flanders, Or his creepy little offspring Rod and Todd, :''TODD: That's us!'' :''ROD: Hooray!'' F-L-A! His name is Ned, D-R-S! He's so white bread. The smiling moustache geek who walks with God. SEE ALSO |
