Flag Institute




Founded on April 23 , ( St George's Day ), 1971 by Dr Bill Crampton , President of FIAV and also one of the world's most respected Vexillologists . The Flag Institute is one of the world's leading research and documentation centres for flags and flag information. Since its creation the Flag Institute has grown to include arguably the largest membership of all the world's vexillilogical organisations.

The Flag Institute’s library, named after Crampton, is the largest flag-related library in the world containing over 40,000 volumes. It is housed in the James Rickett Library Building in Hull , Humberside , UK.

The FI publishes a quarterly 20 page full colour journal, Flagmaster . It holds twice yearly meetings in various locations around the United Kingdom. The Institute itself is governed by a Council of nine members elected annually by members.
