Information About

Find A Grave

Findagrave (or Find-a-Grave) is an on-line database of Cemeteries and Burial records.

The website was founded in 1995 by Jim Tipton . He could not find an existing site that catered to his Hobby of visiting the Grave s of Famous People and in the beginning the site only listed celebrities, be they famous or infamous.

Over time as thousands of visitors wished to use the template to list others of equal personal, if not universal, importance, the site was expanded to include all persons deceased or with pre-need burial sites marked and in place.

The web site contains listings of cemeteries and graves from all around the world. American cemeteries are organized by state and county; and, many cemetery records contain photographs of the cemeteries. Individual grave records contain some or all of the following data fields: Dates and places of birth and death, biographical information, cemetery and plot information, photographs (grave marker, the individual, etc.), and contributor information.

Find A Grave also offers users the opportunity to leave virtual flowers on pages for deceased listed on the site. Users can select an image of a flower or other object, and if they wish, they can also leave a brief note for the deceased's memorial page. Such virtual flowers - up to three - show up on the person's page. There is also a link to view all the flowers for a particular person. As infamous people - including criminals, dictators, and other generally disliked people are also included on Find A Grave, administrators keep what they consider inappropriate messages from being posted in the virtual flowers section. In cases of extensive abuse, administrators can and often have turned off the virtual flowers feature for a person's memorial.

There are two sides the "famous" and the "non-famous" listings with over 10 million unique grave records As Of 2006 . Thousands of contributors submit new listings, updates, corrections, Photograph s and virtual flowers every hour. The site simply wouldn't exist without the 200,000+ contributors.

The Find A Grave Forums provide a place where the contibutors can get answers not only from Administrators but fellow contributors. There are also lists where one can post changes that need to be made on famous listings that require an administrator. The Lounge provides a place for social networking.
