Information About

Financial District (metromover Station)

Financial District Station is a Metromover station in the Brickell Financial district of downtown Miami , Florida .

The station opened May 26 , 1994 . It is located near the intersection of Southeast 14th Street and Brickell Avenue. This is the southern Terminus of the People Mover system. The platform is a half-island design with the tracks running along the north end. There is a short tail track running east of the platform which terminates at Brickell Avenue. Any future extension of the system (which would likely continue east to Brickell Bay Drive, then north to SE 8th Street, then west until it merges back into the Brickell extension around the Eighth Street station) would continue from this point.

CONNECTING METROBUS ROUTES

HURRICANE WILMA

Hurricane Wilma severely damaged the station on the morning of October 24 , 2005 . Wilma's storm surge reached the east entrance of the station on Brickell Avenue. The hurricane's winds gutted the platform. The station's entire ceiling, composed of many narrow metal slats, collapsed and blew away along with the light fixtures embedded in them (similar ceiling damage was seen in much smaller patches throughout the system). The platform-length blue sign running above the edge of the platform displaying the station name, Brickell Loop map and the streets each exit leads to, fell down and shattered, mostly landing on the tracks. It remained attached at the west side of the platform.

Additionally the station's large electronic "NEXT TRAIN" information sign (standing at the center of the platform) was destroyed, with the illuminated blue system map/points of interest display being gutted out and blowing away, then the sign's frame was broken off it's concrete base and fell over. Even one of the station's 2 platform pay phones was knocked off it's stand. The entire platform and track (as well as the stairs and escalator) were covered in broken glass from the shattered windows of the Pacific National Bank building across the street and other office towers in the area which suffered extensive window damage (such as the Colonial Bank Centre at Brickell Avenue and Coral Way-S.E. 13th Street, exactly 1 block north, where a tremendous number of windows were blown out).

Despite the severe damage (the worst suffered by any station on the Metromover system), Financial District reopened when the system resumed operations at about 7:30 P.M. on November 4 , 2005 . The debris was removed, and 4 new lights were installed on the platform, 2 at each end, to temporarily replace the destroyed ceiling lights. Subsequently a transmission cable running from Brickell station had to be replaced. It is not known when the destroyed platform fixtures will be fully replaced. In the meantime, the station is open and operating.
