Final Draft

ADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS

As mentioned, Final Draft is the industry standard for screenplay writing, and as such is well supported. However, copies cost over over $200 and the program is currently only available for Windows or Macintosh. A free alternative for Linux machines is Celtx . Some screenwriters also use macro templates in programs such as Microsoft Word , Open Office , and Emacs . However, using a word processor to write a screenplay takes more time and doesn't work as smoothly (or as quickly) as purpose-built software.

Some writers complain that screenwriting programs such as Final Draft make it difficult to deviate from standard formatting, but producers expect scripts to be in standard format. Deviation from this format can be distracting and often makes a motion picture difficult to budget accurately. With standard formatting, one page typically results in one minute of Screen Time . Producers look at the page count as the number of minutes the movie is likely to play. Writers who fudge the page count with formatting tricks can cause budget overruns in production.
