Film Fights is a free online film festival showcasing indie filmmakers from all over the web. The website started in October 2003, created by Justin Johnson. People from all over the internet can submit their projects and they are voted upon by their peers. Film fights themes have included such titles as "Loose Cannon", "Fractured Dreams" to "Fear the Satan Dog", and have had topics ranging from action, comedy, to film noir. Each film group makes a short film that matches the specified genre. Most topics have to be less than five minutes long and encoded for digital distribution. The film gets entered into the fight along with between four and fifteen other shorts made by directors from as far away as Japan. Visitors to the website watch the shorts and then vote on their favorite. The winner gets practically nothing, besides personal satisfaction and all the bragging rights in the world. Film fights allows both experienced and newcommers to engage in discussions on the site's forums and learn from each other's mistakes. Each film fight has a theme, like the recent one called “Stranger Comes to Town,” a modern western. Later this month it will be “Cruel Streets,” mob or street crime. And while the footage does not look terribly professional, and the acting isn¹t going to win any Oscars, there are some hilarious and inspired moments in these dorm room epics. There's one “Twilight Zone” spoof called “The Dusk Sector” in which a man gets up on the wrong side of the bed and has a day torn from the pages of “The Onion” complete with beatniks in his bathroom playing bongos. Not all the shorts are goofy. In one contest called the “Continuous Shot Movie,” a man comes home and discovers his wife with another man, shoots her and then himself, and the entire scene is played in reverse. Sometimes the most amazing thing about these no budget shorts is the professional-looking title sequences, and there are even some simple special effects. But there's nothing so advanced that you won't watch a few and start thinking you could do it too. It’s good to know that the next film fight is just ten days away."''
