FileFront is a Computer Game and Video Game Download service that provides all the latest game related Patch es, Demos and Mod ifications. FileFront is a relative newcomer to the computer and video game download's market, however has seen rapid expansion over the last year. It offers features that are unique to FileFront over it's competitors, however many users have criticisms over the service that FileFront provide.

FILEFRONT

The main focus of FileFront is to provide a download service to its users, from its Houston -based servers. In addition to this, FileFront also provides some Gaming -related news and articles. The news and articles are provided by Computer Gaming World , a sister-site and offspring from Ziff Davis Media , which owns both sites. The news on FileFront today is often not current or rich on content, and as a result FileFront is no longer a popular destination for gaming news.

The downloads are provided by thirteen US Distro servers, for United States visitors, one '''European Distro''' server for European users, and one '''World Distro''' server for other users. In addition, there is currently several '''FastPass''' servers for subscribers of the 'FastPass' system, offering a 'no wait' advert-free service for its members. In total, FileFront hosts over 45 Terabytes of Data , which is entirely available to the public.

FileFront also offer services such as blogging and image hosting, that are now also being provided by some of it's competitors.

NETWORK & FORUMS

FileFront Network is a collection of over forty specific game-related sites dedicated to providing news and files to its visitors. Each one of these sites has its own unique color scheme and style, but the layout maintains the fundamental principals of each other network site to provide a uniform feeling from site to site. Typically each network site will be named after the game it provides for, usually in abbreviated form, along with the suffix 'files'. For instance, the network site catering for ' uses ' OFPFiles '. Each site may also be accessed via a subdomain of the filefront.com domain, such as http://halflife2.filefront.com/ .

Due to the nature of these sites, people who create unofficial add-ons for the game, or " Mod ders", are a large part of the community as well as the players who wish to stay informed about anything related to that game. The site's also provide the latest patches and updates for the games they cover, as well as trailers and demo's for upcoming games. FileFront Network sites tend to launch in the weeks coming up to a game's release, however occasionally sites launch on a games release date or later. Each site has a corresponding Forum for discussions ranging from help with technical issues to Clan recruitment to just general talk about the game.

FileFront Forums are a large community of over 2.5 Million contributions and 135,000 members ranging from Gamers discussing upcoming releases which interest them to Philosophers debating in ''The Pub'', as well as general browsers looking for something that interests them. As such, the forums are not limited to just game-related discussion centers, but also general topics from Sports to Art and Graphics .

Originally, the forums were a combination of FilesNetwork's (predecessor to FileFront Network) forums, IO Error's forums, and Voodoo Extreme's (VE3D) forums. Posts date back to 1998 , but generally the main portion of articles have been made after 2001 .

The FileFront forums are governed by over fifty ''moderators'', eight ''super moderators'' and eight ''administrators''. These members have the ability to edit, delete, move and merge Threads and posts made within the forum, and the administrators control the technical aspects of the site.

A section of the forums is dedicated to users' images, called the ''Image Gallery''. Here, users may upload their own images and write a description about them, and these images can be searched and commented on. They may also ask questions about the creation and editing of such images in the ''Graphics Department'' forum, where a group of members called the ''FileFront Graphics Team'' offer advice.

Users requiring technical help with their computers can use the ''Tech Discussion'', where articles about Technology itself are also contributed.

CRITICISM

FileFront is often criticized for its slow download speeds and its unreliability. FileFront has gained a reputation for providing a slow and unstable service that has been capitalized on by its competitors. It is also criticized by its members for having a poor and understaffed support service, and for not providing enough support or information. Regardless of this, FileFront has continued to grow in popularity over the last year.
