Porsche was a native of Wiener Neustadt , Austria , and the son of famed engineer Ferdinand Porsche .

The younger Porsche had been a significant contributor to the development of the original Volkswagen Beetle and the Auto Union Grand Prix race car of 1932. In 1947 he founded the Porsche company in Gmünd , Austria and began developing its first sports car, based on the Beetle design, which eventually was called the Type 356 . Besides honorary doctorates given by Vienna Technical University and University Of Stuttgart and the title Professor he also was honorary Senator of the University Of Stuttgart .

He also helped to develop the Leopard Tank .
His mothers name was Aloysia Johanna (Kaes) Porsche.
