Information About

Fear Street

All of the books take place in a fictional town called Shadyside where there is a spooky street called ''Fear Street''. Apparently, this street has been cursed by the Family that it is named after (The Fears), who (most) perished in a terrible fire in the Simon Fear mansion. Since then, evil and terrible things have happened in Shadyside that usually have something to do with ''Fear Street''.

The correct spelling for the family name was originally FIER (Before Simon Fear changed it) this is noted in the Fear street saga series. When rearranged it spells FIRE, which the FIER family has a connection with.

Almost all the books revolve around teenagers with adults playing only small roles. The villains can range from ghosts and monsters to just plain old psychotic killers.

R.L. Stine took a break from writing ''Fear Street'' after writing the ''Fear Street: Seniors'' mini-series in 1999 . In Summer 2005 , he brought ''Fear Street'' back with the three-part ''Fear Street Nights'' mini-series.

MAIN SERIES

The Fear Street books are actually a collection of different series. The first and original series is the main one, simply called ''Fear Street''. This series consists of fifty-five books. Beginning in 1989 with ''The New Girl'' and ending with 1998 's ''Camp Out''. Some of the books are sequels to each other but most are stand alone stories set in the town of Shadyside. Beginning with 1998's ''The Stepbrother'' the series was retitled ''New Fear Street'', even so this is still just a continuation of the main series.

Currently, the main series is being reissued with new covers. Whether or not R.L. Stine will someday continue the series remains to be seen.

FEAR STREET SAGA(S)

In 1993 , Stine wrote a Fear Street trilogy called ''The Fear Street Saga''. This series told the story of the Fear family whom the street is named after. The story starts in the 1600's and ends in 1900 , therefore telling tales of different generations of the family.

The books included in this series are:

  • "The Betrayal" (BOOK 1)

  • "The Secret" (BOOK 2)

  • "The Burning" (BOOK 3)

This became so popular that Stine decided to create a sequel series to ''The Fear Street Saga'' called ''Fear Street Sagas''. Sagas consisted of seventeen books that revealed tales of the Fear family that were not told in the original trilogy.
These books are:
  • "A New Fear" (BOOK 1)

  • "House of Whispers" (BOOK 2)

  • "Forbidden Secrets" (BOOK 3)

  • "The Sign of Fear" (BOOK 4)

  • "The Hidden Evil" (BOOK 5)

  • "Daughters of Silence" (BOOK 6)

  • "Children of Fear" (BOOK 7)

  • "Dance of Death" (BOOK 8)

  • "Heart Of The Hunter" (BOOK 9)

  • "The Awakening Evil" (BOOK 10)

  • "Circle Of Fire" (BOOK 11)

  • "Chamber Of Fear" (BOOK 12)

  • "Faces Of Terror" (BOOK 13)

  • "One Last Kiss" (BOOK 14)

  • "Door Of Death" (BOOK 15)

  • "The Hand Of Power" (BOOK 16)

  • "The Raven Woman" (BOOK 17)

MINI-SERIES

Stine also wrote a few Fear Street Mini-Series.

  • ''Fear Street Cheerleaders'' was a three-part mini-series about the terrifying events that occurred to the Cheerleaders of Shadyside High School. Eventually it was expanded from three-parts to five-parts but the last two are considered part of the ''Super Chillers'' series.

  • ''99 Fear Street: The House of Evil'' was a trilogy about an evil house on Fear Street, in the same vein as The Amityville Horror . It is often regarded as the scariest thing Stein has ever wrote.

  • ''Fear Hall'' was a two part series about a college dorm named after the Fear Family.

  • ''The Cataluna Chronicles'' trilogy was about a haunted car.

  • The ''Fear Park'' trilogy was about an amusement park built in the Fear Street woods.

  • ''Fear Street Seniors'' was a twelve-part limited series about a cursed senior class of Shadyside High. Each book chronicled a month of their senior year and each book actually contained a yearbook showing each member of the class and who had died so far in the series.

GHOSTS OF FEAR STREET

The Ghosts of Fear Street series (with perhaps a little editorial humor) are books either by R. L. Stine and another author, or solely by another author, set in the "Fear Street" universe. (While perhaps not strictly "ghost-written" in that the other author's name does appear on the books, it is certainly Stine's name which is being used to sell them.) A few examples of this series: Camp Fear Ghouls (1997, Jahnna L. Malcolm and R. L. Stine), Body Switchers from Outer Space (1996, Nina Kiriki Hoffman), Night of the Werecat (1996, R. L. Stine and Katherine Lanoe). This series was written for younger children, and therefore some Fear Street fans do not accept them as Canon .
