Information About

Fan Museum

  • Listed houses built in 1721. An orangery decorates with murals has been added to the building and there is a Japanese style garden with a fan shaped parterre.

The Fan Museum has a collection of over 3,500 fans and fan leaves from all over the world from the 11th century to the present day. It is particularly strong in 18th and 19th century European fans. For conservation reasons it is not possible to put the fans on permanent public display, so the Museum stages three exhibitions a year highlighting particular aspects of the history of fans using items from its collection. There is also a permament display about the history of fans, how they are made, and the various types and sources of fans.

The Museum, runs a conservation unit where work is undertaken for other museums and members of the public. It also makes new fans, both one off commissions and limited editions, and runs fan making classes. It has a reference library and conservation service. Its facilities may be hired for private functions.
