Fairfield Township is a Township located in Cumberland County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the township had a total population of 6,283. Fairton is a Census-designated Place and Unincorporated area located within Fairfield Township. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 113.4 Km&2 (43.8 Mi&2 ). 109.5 km&2 (42.3 mi&2) of it is land and 3.9 km&2 (1.5 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.45% water. Fairfield Township borders Lawrence Township , Millville , Deerfield Township , Upper Deerfield Township , Bridgeton , Hopewell Township , Greenwich Township , and the Delaware Bay . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 6,283 people, 1,751 households, and 1,322 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 57.4/km&2 (148.6/mi&2). There were 1,915 housing units at an average density of 17.5/km&2 (45.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 41.41% White , 47.43% African American , 5.08% Native American , 0.56% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 2.39% from Other Races , and 3.10% from two or more races. 8.87% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,751 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were Married Couples living together, 18.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.19. In the township the population was spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 36.4% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 146.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 161.7 males. The median income for a household in the township was $37,891, and the median income for a family was $41,326. Males had a median income of $31,858 versus $23,931 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $17,547. 11.2% of the population and 6.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 14.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. GOVERNMENT Federal, state and county representation Fairfield Township is in the Second Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District. EDUCATION For grades 9-12, students attend Cumberland Regional High School , which serves students from Deerfield Township , Fairfield Township , Greenwich Township , Hopewell Township , Shiloh Borough , Stow Creek Township and Upper Deerfield Township .
