GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 141.5 Km&2 (54.6 Mi&2 ). 139.3 km&2 (53.8 mi&2) of it is land and 2.2 km&2 (0.9 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.56% water. The town has three post offices due to the fact that there are three different unincorporated townships within the municipal jurisdiction of the Town of Fairfield. They are Fairfield Center (no post office), Shawmut (post office location), and Hinckley (post office location). The CDP or urban area of the actual Town of Fairfield also has a post office. The town was formerly known as Kendall's Mill. For a time period of approximately 75 years the urban area of the Town of Fairfield was under a Village Corporation type of government. Thus the Town would have a regular New England style town meeting that covered business for the entire town and then a Village Corporatiion meeting to deal with the urban needs, such as a police service, fire department, town engineer (public works), etc. The non-urban areas such as Shawmut, Fairfield Center, and Hinckley would not be assessed taxes for the above mentioned services because they did not receive them. This arrangement ended in 1929. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 6,573 people, 2,586 households, and 1,773 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 47.2/km&2 (122.3/mi&2). There were 2,801 housing units at an average density of 20.1/km&2 (52.1/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.92% White , 0.35% Black or African American , 0.33% Native American , 0.27% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 0.05% from Other Races , and 1.03% from two or more races. 0.30% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,586 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were Married Couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.92. In the town the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. The median income for a household in the town was $36,462, and the median income for a family was $43,533. Males had a median income of $31,227 versus $22,930 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $16,335. 10.4% of the population and 6.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 9.8% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
