Fables (comics)

Willingham reinterpreted many of the characters, evident in the divorce of Snow White and Prince Charming due to infidelity on the part of the latter. The former was deputy mayor of Fabletown as the series begins. Another principal character is the Big Bad Wolf , who has not only reformed, but gained the ability to take on human appearance and serves as Fabletown's sheriff at the series beginning.

Earlier story arcs each take on the form of a different genre: the first is a Murder Mystery , the next a Conspiracy Thriller , and then a Caper Story .

Various artists have worked on the title. The covers are done by , Lan Medina , P. Craig Russell , and Linda Medley .

Willingham recently announced a spin-off series, '' Jack Of Fables '', that will focus on Jack of the Tales (see below). The series is co-written by former ''Clockwork Storybook'' author Matthew Sturges.

MAJOR CHARACTERS

  • Bigby Wolf (the Big Bad Wolf , Gaffer Wolf) - Having reformed from his violent ways, he became the cigarette-smoking, Trench Coat -clad sheriff. He is extremely cunning and resourceful, in addition to being an excellent Detective . He can change between wolf and human form. He is also the son of the North Wind, and, as such, has some control over the lower-tier winds (eg. blowing your house down). Despite his reformation, he can still be vicious if he believes the situation calls for it. He developed feelings for Snow White and the two have a litter of seven children together. He recently quit his position as the Sheriff (due to the election of Prince Charming as Mayor , who he despises), and left Fabletown altogether. He is currently being tracked by Mowgli for Prince Charming. He fought in both of the World Wars . Due to Snow White's possession of a lycanthropy-stained knife, he is now a werewolf; although, his wolf form is actually that of his more traditional shape. In addition to his human and wolf forms, he can assume an intermediary form that is similar to a Movie werewolf.

  • Snow White - Having divorced her husband, Prince Charming, she has since become the Deputy Mayor of Fabletown. She has a tough, no-nonsense attitude and is considered a bit of an "ice queen." In truth, she does care a great deal about her family and friends. Her relationship with her sister Rose Red was strained, since Rose was the one who had the affair with Charming, but they have reconciled. At first, she rebuffed Bigby Wolf's advances, but later realized she cares for him. When she bore his children (only one of which appears human), she quit her position as deputy mayor to live at the Farm. She has recently been visited by the North Wind , Bigby's father, who wants to help educate the children in the use of their powers.

  • "The Cubs" - Snow and Bigby's seven children are a rowdy, unpredictable bunch of hybrids that seem to have inherited abilities from all facets of their heritage. One of the seven, however, was born with a birth defect; (s)he was a zephyr, a rogue wind, and fed off the air of living beings (accidentally killing them). They can all fly (at first uncontrollably so, flight having been their natural state and they needed to be taught how to ground themselves), and can shift to wolf form as well. Another interesting sidenote is that they all bear a striking resemblence to other prominant Fabletown characters. They are(With the Fable they resemble):

  • ---Winter--Snow White

  • ---Therese--Cinderella

  • ---Blossom--Rose Red

  • ---Darien--Bigby Wolf

  • ---Ambrose--King Cole

  • ---Conner--Prince Charming

  • :And the seventh has been nicknamed Puff by fandom, having no canon name. He/she was sent by Snow to find his self-exiled father after she discovered her son/daughter was behind the recent rash of mysterious deaths.

  • Prince Charming - While he is charming and handsome, he is by nature a Womanizer , liar and a general rogue. His (known) previous wives in chronological order were Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. He lived in Europe after leaving the Homelands, mooching off of nobles and ex-nobles. He returned to Fabletown just prior to Rose Red's "murder." He hatched an intricate scheme, killing Bluebeard in a duel and running for mayor against Old King Cole (and winning), who had been Mayor since Fabletown's inception, so he would have access to Fabletown's Treasury (where Bluebeard's finances would go). Unfortunately, he made some false presumptions (and thus promises) and is currently having a difficult time in office with the public. As with his other endeavors, he set his sights on something he desired, won it, and then utterly screwed things up. Following his victory, he appointed Beauty (not his ex-wife) Deputy Mayor and Beast Sheriff. Spending a large amount of time with Beauty on the job, he attempted to begin an affair with her; she's loyal to her husband and shot him down. Theories both on and off the page speculate that he gives off powerful/magic pheromones, which are responsible for his strong ability to seduce nearly any woman he makes the attempt with.

  • Beauty And The Beast - A loving couple who have recently profited from Snow and Bigby's departure, filling their positions respectively. Beast, now chief of security, has allied himself with one of the more powerful Witches in Fabletown, and can now transform into the Beast at will. Beauty has taken Snow's position as Deputy Mayor, and is currently trying to cope with all of the responsibility. Prince Charming recently tried to seduce her, but she refused him, threatening to send her husband after him if he tried again.

  • Boy Blue ( Little Boy Blue ) - We first see him as Snow White's assistant and gopher. He has great admiration for her. He likes to play the Blues on his horn. At one time, he had a brief romance with what he thought was Red Riding Hood in the Homelands. After the election of Prince Charming, he left his position in the Fabletown government, along with Wolf and White, and left for the Homelands to look for Red Riding Hood. He took Pinocchio's body, the Witching Cloak, and the Vorpal Sword with him (without permission). He discovered, to his dismay, that the Red Riding Hood he spent the night with was a fetch (magical clone) and that Geppetto was, in fact, the Adversary. He returns to Fabletown with the real Red Riding Hood, who knows nothing of him. For stealing Fabletown's magical property, Boy Blue has recently been sentenced to two years of hard labor at the Farm (a severely reduced sentence due to Rose Red being in charge of defining 'hard labor').

  • Red Riding Hood - The most recent addition to Fabletown. She was a pawn used by The Adversary, as multiple fetches were made of her (without her knowledge) to infiltrate groups that were against The Adversary. Fabletown had been infiltrated by one of these fetches ( Baba Yaga in fact) not too long ago, leaving everyone with a bit of animosity for the real Red. She first latched on to Boy Blue, then Flycatcher, as they are two of the few people that trust her.

  • Jack of the Tales (the same Jack And The Beanstalk , Little Jack Horner and many other fairy tale characters named Jack) - A rather benign schemer always looking for quick ways to make a buck. His plans frequently come to naught. They include selling the remaining magical beans, joining the Confederate army during the Civil War , and starting an online business. He briefly dated Rose Red, whose murder they attempted to stage. His latest scheme involved robbing one of the deceased Bluebeard's treasuries and traveling to Hollywood with Jill to make movies about himself. However, Jill ratted him out, and Sheriff Beast caught up with him, and Jack is currently permanently exiled from Fabletown. A new spinoff series is in the works to cover his actions beyond this point.

  • Rose Red - Snow White’s sister, one-time mistress of Prince Charming, ex-girlfriend of Jack of the Tales, and brief Fiancée of Bluebeard. After spending centuries rebelling against her sister, she finally found her niche, and currently manages the Farm, where she dotes on her nieces and nephews. Though her life as the original party girl is well behind her, she still maintains a cheerful attitude and independent spirit, evident in how she runs the Farm well, regardless of how the current administration would like her to manage things.

  • Bluebeard - The former nobleman and serial killer who has reformed, or rather pretended he had. He was involved with various shady dealings in Fabletown. He was the nemesis of Bigby Wolf and was later killed by Prince Charming in order to seize his vast assets. Contrary to what his name might suggest, he is not, nor ever was, a pirate. It seems reasonably clear he'll stay dead.

  • Goldilocks - The girl who broke into the Three Bears ' home and ate their porridge has grown up. Now she is a gun-toting Leftist political agitator. She led about half of the Farm against Snow White in a rather foolish revolution. Despite her claims to be fighting for the 'rights'of the Farm Fables, her actions make it quite clear that she didn't care about the cause in the slightest, simply the power that such a position would provide. She was supposedly killed (axe to the head, knocked off a cliff, hit by a truck off another cliff into a river), but being such a popular myth, may come back to life.

  • Pinocchio - A wooden boy brought to life, Pinocchio seems perpetually angry, possibly due to the fact that he is over a thousand years old, but hasn't hit puberty. He found out his father Geppetto was still alive, and apparently a captive of the Adversary. He would have returned to the Homelands to find his father, but was beheaded in the Battle of Fabletown. He was later carried back to the Homelands by Boy Blue and restored to life by Geppetto. He stayed with Geppetto despite being given a choice when Boy Blue escaped.

  • The Adversary - The Emperor who conquered the Homelands of the Fables, uniting them under his singular reign. The Emperor was seemingly decapitated by Little Boy Blue at the culmination of a one-man guerilla war against the Empire. However, it has been revealed that the Emperor is merely a large, enchanted puppet carved by Geppetto , and Geppetto is, in fact, the true power behind the throne. Contrary to popular opinion, Willingham never seriously intended the Adversary to be Peter Pan . Geppetto had always been the principal choice, and the entire story was fleshed out before the first issue of the series was even written.

  • Frau Totenkinder - The Black Forest witch from the Hansel And Gretel story. She is the leader and most powerful of the magicians of Fabletown. Her name is German for "dead children". There is far more to her than meets the eye; She has spies in the Homelands and had knowledge of Snow White's seventh child even though no one else knew. She is probably one of the most dangerous and powerful Fables in Fabletown. So far she has used her incredible resources and ability to stay several steps ahead of her enemies to Fabletown's advantage...so far...

Numerous other characters have made important appearances, including Old King Cole , Flycatcher ( The Frog Prince ), the Three Bears , the Three Little Pigs , Cinderella , Mowgli of The Jungle Book , Reynard , Sinbad , and Chicken Little .
