The Town of Fabius contains a village of Fabius . It is in the southeast part of the county. HISTORY The town was formed in 1798 . The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution . On the formation of Cortland County , Fabius lost territory to the new county. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 121.2 Km&2 (46.8 Mi&2 ). 120.6 km&2 (46.6 mi&2) of it is land and 0.6 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water. The south town line is the border of Cortland County, New York and the east town line is the border of Madison County, New York . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 1,974 people, 686 households, and 515 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 16.4/km&2 (42.4/mi&2). There were 779 housing units at an average density of 6.5/km&2 (16.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.77% White , 0.46% Black or African American , 0.66% Native American , 0.25% Asian , 0.10% Pacific Islander , 0.05% from Other Races , and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 686 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were Married Couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.30. In the town the population was spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.6 males. The median income for a household in the town was $52,663, and the median income for a family was $59,167. Males had a median income of $40,745 versus $28,036 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $21,206. 5.7% of the population and 4.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
