Chemical physics of surfaces: basic studies of Chemisorption and reaction on well-characterized transition-metal surfaces, using Electron Diffraction and Electron Spectroscopy ; surface reaction dynamics; heterogeneous catalysis; electronic materials. It might also include self-assembled monolayers and organic surface study. Experimental activities in this course range from exploring the ability of photonic reagents to create tailored molecular excitations out to altering the outcome of chemical reactions. HISTORY In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the worlds of chemistry and physics seemed well separated. Chemistry was the study of those changes that involved alterations in molecular structure. Physics was the study of those changes that did not involve such alterations. |
