The story is a fictionalisation of the serial killer's life; large segments of the movie were adapted from a fictional book entitled 'the communist who ate children', and it is for the reason that the film falsifies a number of aspects related to Chikatilo's life and crimes that the Chikatilo character is renamed ''Andrei Evilenko'', and that no claim to being based on a true story is made.
