It originally stems from Descartes ' First Meditation: "I will suppose... that some evil demon of the utmost power and cunning has employed all his energies to deceive me." This theory supposes that an external being is deliberately manipulating our perception of the external world to create a false image of the world. We can generalise from the fact that we can not know the evil demon does not exist, to the inference that we can not know that the external world exists, or even that mathematics exist. Descartes concluded that since he cannot be Certain that an evil deamon is doing this, the only thing he ''can'' know for certain is " I Think, Therefore I Am ". |
