''Evergreen Holy Night'' is the fourth episode of the Oh My Goddess! OVA series, originally released on 1993-12-28 .

PLOT

Belldandy and Keiichi Morisato are together at their temple home when Keiichi gives her a ring. She is overwhelmed by the gesture, but explains she has to go: wings come out of her back, and she floats up into the sky. Keiichi wakes with a start, sees Belldandy beside him, with a concerned look on her face, and realises it was all a bad dream.

The following morning, Keiichi steps outside to find the temple grounds covered with thick snow. Urd literally creates a snow man with which to battle against Skuld 's snowball throwing machine. Wondering if the roads are safe, Keiichi goes to put chains on his bike when he discovers there is not a hint of snow anywhere outside the temple.

Deciding to hide the snow before too many people see it, Keiichi starts clearing the snow off the roof, while Skuld creates a snow-clearing machine. He is startled, however, and falls: Skuld soon identifies that he was spooked by a 'bug', and promptly defeats it with her hammer. The snow disappears immediately.

Back in the house, they discuss what is happening when, suddenly, the table disappears. Before they have time to work out what is happening, Keiichi becomes magnetized! Not a moment too soon, Skuld activates a bug-catching machine --- a modified rice cooker --- and sets things back to normal. She identifies the bug exhaust forms when Keiichi and Belldandy are too close to one another.

At this moment, the phone rings. Belldandy answers, and received a recall notice from The Almighty . She reassures Keiichi that everything will be OK, but knows that in three days time she will return to the Heavens, never to see Keiichi again. Given the troubles they had in the morning, Keiichi suggests they make their way to class separately.

All around the campus, a rumor spreads about Keiichi and Belldandy splitting up. When Sayako inquires about these, he becomes defensive, so she does not press it any further. Belldandy makes her way to campus, with a warning from Skuld that the effects of the bugs are likely to occur at ever increasing distances between the two. This becomes clear when they meet in a corridor and, without being too close to each other, the windows explode.

Later on, Keiichi is eating alone when Belldandy finds him once again. She attempts to enter the cafeteria, but no sooner does she walk in the door than a nearby vending machine blows up. Afraid, Belldandy flees. As Keiichi finishes his lunch, he is joined by Megumi Morisato , who asks him about the rumors. He explains that Belldandy will soon have to return to where she came from, and does not know what to do. Megumi jokingly suggests he offer Belldandy a ring. Keiichi takes the suggestion seriously, and sets off.

Needing money, Keiichi asks Tamiya And Otaki to fix him up with some part-time jobs. They agree, and Sora Hasegawa also offers to help him find work. Keiichi also asks Hasegawa to pass a message onto Belldandy, suggesting they head home the same way they arrived, which she does. Attempting to leave campus through the mirror in the toilet, Belldandy is almost caught by Sayoko Mishima . Sayoko is not surprised to find out there was nothing behind the rumor of Belldandy and Keiichi breaking up, but was shocked and disappointed to hear it was true that Belldandy was leaving.

Meanwhile, Urd and Skuld have identified the source of the energy which is allowing the bugs to enter the mortal realm. There is a strange, powerful energy sealed in a cherry tree near the temple. When Belldandy returns home, they inform her of this. This seems to horrify Belldandy, however, she refuses to tell why. When Keiichi confronts her, she runs off crying. "This is my sin."

TRIVIA

  • When suggesting to Keiichi he buy a ring, Megumi tells him to spend 'three months pay' on it. This is the (western) tradition for buying an engagement ring; Keiichi does not seem to know this.

  • When Belldandy tells Sayako she will be leaving, Sayoko hints that she is interested in Keiichi. Though nothing comes of this in the OVA canon, in both the manga and the TV series, we see that Sayoko eventually falls in love with Keiichi.
