"Even Better Than the Real Thing", released in 1992, was the fourth single from U2's by-then successful album '' Achtung Baby ''. A semi-paean to Glam Rock (in particular Marc Bolan ), the single was moderately successful, although in peaking at No. 12 it became the one of the few U2 singles that failed to reach the top 10 in the UK Singles Chart . A few months after its initial release, however, DJ Paul Oakenfold took the track to his studio, remixing it as a dance record known as the "Perfecto Mix", which charted better than the original, reaching No. 8. With the obvious irony aside, this is one of the few instances of a remixed rock single doing better chart business than the original, and is almost certainly what prompted U2 to promote additional remixes of their singles (for example when promoting the singles from the '' Pop '' album in 1997 ). The "Perfecto Mix" of the song got a separate release than the studio version. In the United States , the single was a major hit on rock radio. It reached #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 , #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and #5 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also reached #27 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and #35 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart.
