Western music is generally considered to have six overall periods of development, those being in chronological order:

Middle Ages (ca. 400-c. 1400)

Renaissance (ca. 1400-c. 1600)

Baroque (c. 1600-c. 1750)

Classical (c. 1750-1820)

Romantic (c. 1820-c. 1900)

20th Century (c. 1900-present)
