Eurobasket 2005 (qualification)

The 2005 European Basketball Championship, commonly called ''' Eurobasket 2005 ''', was held in Belgrade , Serbia And Montenegro between 16 September and 25 September 2005 . The FIBA European Basketball Championship is a Bi-annual Basketball competition between national teams organised by FIBA Europe , the sports governing body in Europe . This is the third time that championship is hosted by city of Belgrade (previously in 1961 and 1975).

=Competition Format=

The Eurobasket competition format comprises of two divisions, '''Division A''' and '''Division B''' both of which play parallel to each other . Although their games take place at the same time, they compete for two very different goals.

Division A competing for the honours of being the Champions Of Europe , and for a berth in the Basketball World Championship . The ''qualifying round'' involves five groups of four teams playing a double round-robin tournament, whereby the winner receives 2 points and loser receives 1 point. The top two teams in each group qualify to the ''final round'', the remaining ten teams then compete in the ''additional qualifying round''. It is organized into three groups of four, again playing a double round-robin tournament. Once finished, the top team in each group moves on to the ''additional qualifying tournament'', the middle team is out of the competition until the next '''Eurobasket''', the bottom teams are then moved to the ''relegation tournament''. The ''additional qualifying tournament'' consists of three teams playing each other in Novi Sad , the top team becoming the final qualifier into the ''final round''. The ''relegation tournament'' is very similar, except this the bottom teams are relegated into '''Division B''', and the top team is safely out of the competition.

Division B competes for a promotion into '''Division A''' for the next Eurobasket tournament. The 15 teams are divided into four groups, with three or four teams in each, playing a double round-robin tournament in the ''qualifying round''. Once finished, the top team in each group moves on to the ''qualification games''. The top two teams in the ''qualification games'' are then promoted to '''Division A'''.
