The game was developed using Genesis 3D , an Open Source Game Engine .
The Anti-Defamation League publicised the existence of the game and unsuccessfully lobbied the developers of Genesis3D to change their licensing conditions to prohibit the use of the engine to develop racist games. They have also lobbied the Interactive Digital Software Association to encourage their members to adopt such policies.
Ethnic Cleansing is possibly the first computer or video game that was conceived, developed and commercially released having explicitly racist content (though some would argue '' Custer's Revenge '' as the claimant of that dubious honor). Games with racist themes have existed before in freeware form (for example, KZ Manager ) and as mods for commercial games.
Resistance Records intends to create a similar line of games based on the events of the '' Turner Diaries ''.
Also, a similar game called and lets out his pent-up rage against the black and mexican gangs who have been making his life hell, as well as some Jews (''who are depicted as pimps, as well as porn and drug pushers''). It, however attracted much less attention than Ethnic Cleansing.
- It is very hard to find reviews for the game, and all major game related sites and press didn't bother with it.
- The game (and also its sequel, White Law) can only be ordered directly from Resistance Records, something that many reviewers, magazines and curious players are probably not willing to do.
- The gameplay is actually pretty simple, with an extremely limited arsenal of weapons, and only the controversial theme makes the game stand out, otherwise it is a budget-quality title under many aspects, especially by 2002 standards for commercial PC games.
- Despite the game's title, which would imply a long, grand-scale " Ethnic Cleansing " campaign by part of the player, the game is actually very short (only 3 levels), and the alleged "racial fight" takes place in an area not bigger than a few city blocks, including the subway.
- The number of enemies faced (not more than a few dozens in each level) also makes the gameplay to appear more like a violent street riot, than an "ethnic cleansing". It's only their resistance and attack speed that makes the game difficult.
- Rockstar Games slasher title '' Manhunt '' contains two levels in which the player is required to kill skinheads. ''Manhunt'' also features two levels where the character travels through a slum neighborhood, one level into the subway, and then later levels lead to find Starkweather at his armed and guarded compound, the leader of the snuff film ring. Many of the enemies in these levels are white (with very few blacks or Hispanics even in the game) as is Starkweather. This level progression closely resembles the equivalent in Ethnic Cleansing . ''Manhunt'' was released in 2003.
