"PILOT"

Stuart begins his day listening to Gavin complain about the fact that nobody bought his Novel despite critical acclaim. Harold, the shop's regular and preeminent but retired Rocket Scientist , joins the duo at the coffee bar and mistakes the wig-wearing cardboard cutout of Gavin for the Waitress , Katrina. Irate over having no one to serve him his Coffee , he complains about the state of the world's standards.

All attention is diverted when Skyler walks in and prceeds to break up with her boyfriend on her Cellphone . Stuart offers to help her out and points her in the direction of books on relationships.

Katrina finally shows up and recounts her awful morning of mishaps to her boss. After a little prodding, Harold finally gets his Latte .

When Skyler brings her book selection to the register, Gavin tries to convince her that it is too low-brow and offers her a more intellectual book. She rejects his suggestion on the basis that she doesn't like the author's photo on the back. Gavin, clearly aggitated, continues to put down er selection until she points out that he is just as guilty of judging a book by its cover as she. He relents and sells her the book of her choice.

Skyler sits down and begins reading her new book. At the same time, Gavin is scolding his brother, Stuart, for gawking at Skyler. Harold and Skyler meet for the first time and talk about whether or not people can change. Harold responds negatively so she decides once and for all to break up with her boyfriend, a decision that Stuart supports wholeheartedly. Gavin is worried when he finds out that Skyler has invited her boyfriend to the bookstore to confront him. Skyler is worried too and recruits everyone to help her stand up to her man.

Gavin's ex-wife, Charlotte, and their two kids show up and, after finding out she's dating a Doctor , Gavin realizes there is no hope of reconciliation. In a desperate attempt to show her up, he begs Skyler to pretend she's his new flame. She agrees and puts on quite a show. Charlotte storms out with the kids in tow.

Skyler's boyfriend shows up and tries to charm his way back into her life. At the same time, Charlotte walks in and tells Gavin she is now interested in a possible reconciliation. Gavin refuses to bend and tells her that he is a new man. Skyler kicks her boyfriend out and she and Gavin share a moment. Stuart takes the opportunity to offer her a job, a notion which Gavin is not fond of. he finally capitulates and tells Skyler to show up the next day at ten o'clock.

"BEAT THE CANDIDATE"

Skyler arrives on time for her first day of work hung-over and scantily clad. Gavin's attempt to get her started is interrupted by her Cell Phone ...twice. She proves her dedication, however, when she voluntarily helps out her first customer.

Brent, played by guest star Tony Hale (Buster on '' Arrested Development '' ) enters and asks about the Help Wanted sign in the window. Stuart is quick to point out the position has been filled, but Gavin decides to take a look at his resume anyway. Of course, it is quite impressive, and Gavin seriously considers replacing Skyler. Stuart pleads her case and begs him to give her a chance, but Gavin is unconvinced.

Katrina runs into the bookstore, apologizing for her tardiness. Stuart immediately notices she looks a little dolled up. Harold, stopping for his morning Coffee , remarks that Science has shown how beautiful people can make others a bit more aggressive than usual.

Skyler cannot stop yawning and Stuart comments that her previous evening's exploits must have been tiring. She invites him to come out with her and her girlfriends sometimes--an invitation which renders Stuart speechless. He does remember to mention that he cannot accompany her on the 17th of May, inciting his elective gum surgery.

Skyler asks Katrina to make her a triple Espresso and proceeds to engage Harold in conversation. They all agree that the environment they work in is very much like a family. As soon as Skyler steps away, Katrina admits that she served decaffeinated coffee.

Gavin and Stuart are still debating whether or not Skyler will be an asset to Stacked. Gavin is adamant about hiring Brent, but Stuart proclaims her worth and cites her energy as being the reason they should keep her on. It's then they notice Skyler asleep at the coffee bar.

Gavin sees no option but to fire Skyler. He asks her into his office and tries to let her down easy. After the deed is done, Skyler leaves the bookstore much to Stuart's dismay.

The next day Brent and Gavin are working together and having a great time. Katrina lets them know she is much happier being the only female on staff. Suddenly, Skyler enters with a big bouquet of Flowers . When Gavin excalaims that she can't unfire herself, she adamantly disagrees. She explains that she is determined to stay. Gavin caves, saying he will decide at the end of the day whether to keep Skyler or Brent.

At first it appears Brent is more qualified. His true colors quickly shine through as he is revealed to be an arrogant, condescending know-it-all. Harold notes that it is a terrible mistake to think that brains and beauty can't go together.

Gavin is about to fire Skyler when he hears that Brent was badmouthing his Novel earlier. He fires Gavin and hires Skyler.
