HISTORY

Episcopal High School was founded in 1965 with intentions of bringing an Episcopalian college preparatory school to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Founding members of the school include G. Allen Penniman , Henry Klock , Dick H. Hearin , and A. C. Lewis . Originally on the site of St. James Episcopal Church located in downtown Baton Rouge, Episcopal served students in grades 8-12. Later moving to it's current campus located at 3200 Woodland Ridge Blvd. , the school expanded to grades 5-12, on to 1-12, and K-12 in 1995.

Facilities at Episcopal include the Visual and Performing Arts Center, the Middle School building, a science building, the Lower School and Greer Center for the Performing Arts, the Kindergarten building, large classroom buildings, a chapel, and a dining hall. Episcopal also has computer and writing labs, as well as computers with Internet access in each classroom. The main library was renovated in 2000 to make it the technological hub of the campus, servicing the network of Dell computers and wireless internet server. A second newly renovated library serves Episcopal’s Lower School students. Athletic facilities include two gymnasiums, a weight room, a football stadium, soccer fields, a softball field, an all-weather track, a heated swimming pool, five tennis courts, and a baseball complex. The buildings on campus were all designed in a master plan by renowned Louisiana architect A. Hayes Town .

SCANDAL AND ECONOMIC DECEPTION

In the fall of 2003 , former business manager "Buddy" Anderson was arrested by an undercover Police officer in Forest Park after allegedly exposing himself while sitting in his parked car during school hours. Anderson was asked to resign from his position at Episcopal. After his departure, an Audit was performed to evaluate current financial situations at Episcopal High School. The audit revealed that the Headmaster of twenty years, Rev. Paul Hancock had taken advances in pay for more than ten years. Hancock embezzled an alleged $117,663.53, funding his purchase of a Range Rover luxury SUV among other amenities. The discovery, erupting the campus into chaos, received coverage by local television news stations WBRZ and WAFB among articles in The Advocate . Hancock resigned before being asked to step down by the Board of Trustees. Replacing Hancock is current headmistress Deborah "Kay" Betts , and replacing Anderson is Director of Finance Tim Barrett .
