Information About

Endicott Johnson Corporation

The towns of Endicott, New York and Johnson City, New York are named for the founders of the shoe company. There is also a bridge over the Susquehanna River (Route 201), which is named in honor of C.F. Johnson. As owner of the corporation, his mission statement was to value his employees and give them a ''fair deal'' even in times of otherwise harsh economic conditions.

CONTRIBUTION TO ECONOMY

The company was responsible for nearly all of the shoe and footwear for the United States Army during World War I and World War II .

At its peak, E-J was one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the nation, with retail outlets in over 30 states.

For more information on contributions to the local economy, see the articles related to the cities.

PRESENT DAY

The demise of the E-J shoe company is rooted in many economic changes. Its founding principles of valuing labor were threatened by the availability of cheap foreign labor and the rise of global shoe-makers such as Nike . According to some sources, C.F. Johnson was a vehement critic of Free Trade , and believed that it was contrary to his glorification of the American worker.

At present, the central headquarters and shoe factory are vacant, located on the eastern edge of Johnson City. Other factories are also vacant, though some have been recently occupied by area businesses and other corporations.
