PLOT

On a routine trip through the Stargate , SG-1 find a beautiful planet with no apparent signs of technology. They suddenly see a man running from a bunch of rabid dogs, and they save his life. He is initially very grateful, until he sees Carter , and exclaims, "She is a woman!"

The man's father and some of his clan show up, and when they see Carter they point arrows at her. Apparently, in this culture, women are not allowed to show their faces. Carter is offended and does not react well. Before mass-killing ensues, the man they saved tells his father that the woman saved his life, and the father invites them all back to the village.

Once there, Daniel discovers that they have encountered a culture resembling that of Mongolian nomads, perfectly preserved since being transported here by the Goa'uld thousands of years ago.

The man's father, Moughal, is a law-abiding man. The laws of the various clans of this country state that women must be obedient, not show their faces, and not speak unless spoken to. To prevent Carter from being killed, he gives her a women's outfit that covers her face. The guys think she looks great in it, but she is less than amused.

While Daniel occupies in his anthropology, that night, Abu, the man they saved, captures Carter and takes her to a neighbouring clan led by a fierce warlord, Turghan. Abu will sell her as she is very beautiful. Moughal discovers that Abu has done this and informs SG-1; they all begin on Abu's trail.

When Abu meets Turghan, Turghan lusts for Carter. Abu wishes the hand in marriage of Turghan's daughter in exchange for her, but Turghan refuses. He takes Carter anyway, and kicks Abu out. However, we can see that Abu and Turghan's daughter are in love, and are upset. Later, Abu makes plans with her secretly to elope.

When SG-1 arrive, they save Carter, and begin to escape. However, Turghan is preparing to stone his daughter to death for disobedience. They cannot simply stop him by force as that will cause a war, so they must stop him lawfully. Moughal explains that there is a law that states that a clan leader can challenge another to halt a stoning. However, it will be a battle to the death. As they have previously pretended that Carter was a clan leader (in the hope that this would free her), and as Moughal is too old, she makes the challenge.

Carter and Turghan fight, and she beats him. The stoning is stopped, and Abu and Turghan's daughter are reunited and to be wed. Turghan will not make war, as he was beaten fairly, but he grudges it all the same, defeated by a woman!

It looks like this event may even end the enslavement on the planet, and, having learnt much and made new friends, SG-1 return home through the Stargate.

NOTES

  • The title refers to the freeing of the women in the world SG-1 visits.

  • This was the first "regular" episode, i.e. its happenings were by and large inconsequential to the grand scale of things in the Stargate universe.

  • Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Turghan also played Shang Tsung in '' Mortal Kombat ''.
